Managing Partner, Hoffmann & Baron, LLP Featured on Legal Live Special

Daniel A. Scola, Jr., Managing Partner, Hoffmann & Baron, LLP, was recently a guest on “Be That Lawyer LIVE!” with Host Steve Fretzin where he discussed how to drive long-term success in legal business development.

Scola discussed ways in which new attorneys can grow and offered advice on networking. “I think, especially with the newer lawyers, they’re not used to speaking on the phone or in person as much as prior generations. They text, they email, they do lots of behind-the-scenes communication, but getting on the phone or in person communication is not as comfortable for them.” Scola requires his associates to stretch beyond their comfort level when it comes to communications and to do so on a regular basis, such as opting for personal conversation and meetings and giving presentations throughout the year. In having them practice their public speaking skills, Scola sees growth in their confidence; creating a better chance to gain future clients.

Additionally, Scola
explained a common miscalculation a lawyer can make, “Over promising. It’s a balance between being positive and identifying a path forward with being realistic and honest. Not overpromising is sometimes a difficult tight rope to walk. You want to give them hope, but it’s really easy to overpromise. Finally, you must deliver on what you say. If you say you are going to do this, you better be sure when you say it, that it is in fact what you can and will do.
